Commercial Flooring hiring kit

How to hire for Commercial Flooring.

To hire for commercial flooring well, My Trade Talent's Commercial Flooring hiring kit takes all 4 roles we recruit in order: what each seat is and what it pays, the technical questions that test it, the 3 credentials to verify, and what can kill the offer between acceptance and the first day.

4 roles: Commercial Carpet Installer, LVT / Hard Surface Installer, Polished Concrete Installer, Commercial Flooring PM. Free, with nothing to fill in. If you would rather a recruiter ran the search, that is the Commercial Flooring recruiting page.

Step 1 · Plan

What each commercial flooring seat is, and what it pays.

Each band is labelled with where it comes from. A My Trade Talent band is mid-experience, built from our own engagement history, and moves with experience and region. A BLS band is the federal 10th to 90th percentile, national and unadjusted, used where we have not closed enough searches in the trade to publish our own.

We publish no commercial flooring median of our own yet, so this is the all-trades figure: My Trade Talent's median commercial trades hire took 21 days across 88 searches closed in 2026 year to date, counted as calendar days from our first contact with the candidate to the hire. The full distribution is in the Hiring Index.

Price the seat by experience and region in the salary calculator, and work out what leaving it open costs in the cost of vacancy calculator.

Step 3 · Interview

How to interview for each commercial flooring role.

Everyone who applies will claim the experience. These are the questions that test it, the signals that separate a strong candidate from a plausible one, and the mistake each seat invites.

Commercial Carpet Installer

My Trade Talent band

Installs commercial broadloom and carpet tile: subfloor preparation and moisture testing, layout and seam planning, direct glue-down and double-stick, pattern match, and transitions to other surfaces. Most commercial carpet failures start under the carpet.

Questions that find out

  1. How do you test a slab for moisture and what reading stops the installation?
  2. How do you lay out seams in a corridor with windows down one side?
  3. What goes wrong with quarter-turn carpet tile installation and how do you avoid it?

What a strong candidate shows

  • Tests and documents subfloor moisture rather than assuming the slab is ready
  • Plans seams against the light and the traffic pattern, not just the roll width
  • Has installed carpet tile in occupied space in phases

The mistake this seat invites. Hiring on square footage installed and skipping the subfloor questions. The moisture test is the part that decides whether the job comes back.

LVT / Hard Surface Installer

My Trade Talent band

Installs luxury vinyl tile and plank, sheet vinyl, rubber and other resilient hard surfaces: substrate preparation and levelling, moisture mitigation, adhesive selection, layout, welding on sheet goods, and base and transition work.

Questions that find out

  1. The slab is out of flat by a quarter inch over ten feet. What do you do before you install?
  2. How do you choose between a pressure-sensitive and a hard-set adhesive?
  3. Walk me through heat-welding a sheet vinyl seam in a patient room.

What a strong candidate shows

  • Treats substrate flatness as the controlling variable, because LVT telegraphs everything under it
  • Knows which adhesive goes with which product and moisture condition
  • Has heat-welded sheet vinyl seams in healthcare or similar environments

The mistake this seat invites. Assuming carpet installers convert directly. Resilient work is less forgiving of the substrate and the adhesive choice, and the failures are visible.

Polished Concrete Installer

My Trade Talent band

Grinds, densifies and polishes concrete slabs to a specified finish: progressive diamond grit sequence, densifier application and cure, aggregate exposure class, joint filling, and the gloss or clarity level the specification names. The slab that exists sets the ceiling on the result.

Questions that find out

  1. The owner wants Class C aggregate exposure on a slab that was finished hard. What do you tell them?
  2. Walk me through your grit sequence to an 800 finish.
  3. When do you apply densifier and what goes wrong if you apply it too early?

What a strong candidate shows

  • Speaks in grit sequence and exposure class rather than "polished"
  • Assesses the slab before committing to a finish level
  • Understands densifier timing and what happens when it is rushed

The mistake this seat invites. Selling or hiring against a photograph. The finish achievable depends on the existing slab, and the expectation conversation is part of the skill.

Commercial Flooring PM

My Trade Talent band

Manages commercial flooring projects: takeoff and buyout, material lead times and dye lots, moisture testing and mitigation decisions, phasing in occupied buildings, installer scheduling across jobs, and the attic stock and closeout the owner expects.

Questions that find out

  1. Moisture testing comes back high two days before installation. What happens?
  2. How do you phase a floor replacement in an occupied office?
  3. A dye lot shortage leaves you short on a corridor. What are your options?

What a strong candidate shows

  • Manages dye lot and lead time as a scheduling constraint from the start
  • Has made the moisture mitigation call and can explain who paid for it
  • Phases occupied-building work around the tenant, not around the crew

The mistake this seat invites. Treating flooring as a commodity buy. The moisture decision and the phasing plan are where the margin and the disputes live.

Every role in every trade is in the interview question bank.

Step 4 · Offer

What can kill a commercial flooring offer before day one.

The things that end an accepted offer between the yes and the start date, specific to this trade and each sourced.

  • Nobody on the crew can defend the moisture reading

When a floor fails, the question is who ran the test and whether they were qualified to. The five ASTM methods are each a specific procedure with its own conditions, and ICRI will not certify a technician without pre-qualifying their hands-on testing experience first. A crew with no certified tester is not only a staffing gap, it is the warranty exposure sitting underneath every installation. Ask who holds it and when it expires, because it runs five years.

  • The lead renovator card that quietly halved its own life

EPA renovator certification runs five years, but only if the refresher included hands-on training. "Individuals who take a renovator refresher course that does not include hands-on training will be certified for 3 years", and they "must, for their next refresher course, take a refresher course that includes hands-on training to maintain renovator certification". A candidate who took the quick online refresher twice is not certified at all, and almost nobody checks which kind they took.

  • Hiring a grinding crew and inheriting a medical surveillance programme

Polished concrete and substrate prep put people under the construction silica standard. Table 1 requires a handheld grinder to run either an integrated water feed or a shroud and dust collection, and the obligation that follows the hire is medical surveillance for "each employee who will be required under this section to use a respirator for 30 or more days per year": a baseline examination within 30 days, a chest X-ray interpreted by a NIOSH-certified B Reader, spirometry, and repeats at least every three years. That is a cost and a calendar, and it starts with the hire rather than with the first job.

Add up the whole offer, not just the base, in the offer calculator.

Step 5 · Onboard

Credentials to verify before the first day.

Each names the body that issues it and links to the issuer's own page or a .gov page. Researched 2026-09-23; re-read the source before relying on an entry.

  • ICRI Concrete Slab Moisture Testing Technician, Grade 1

    International Concrete Repair Institute

The credential behind the single most expensive failure mode in commercial flooring. It covers five named ASTM methods rather than a general competence: F710 for pH, F1869 for calcium chloride vapour emission, F2170 for in-situ relative humidity, F2659 for non-destructive meters and F3191 for substrate porosity. Entry "requires pre-qualification based on the applicant's previous hands-on slab moisture testing experience as approved by ICRI", and it is "valid for five (5) years from the date of completion".

    Source: www.icri.org/our-certifications/csmt-program/
  • EPA Lead-Safe Certified Renovator

US EPA, Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule, 40 CFR Part 745 Subpart E

Required of "anyone paid to perform work that disturbs painted surfaces in homes, childcare facilities and preschools built before 1978". For a commercial flooring contractor that means schools and daycare centres, which is exactly the recurring institutional work most firms want. Both the firm and the individual renovator have to be certified, and a crew without one cannot legally take the job.

    Source: www.epa.gov/lead/lead-renovation-repair-and-painting-program
  • INSTALL certification

INSTALL, the International Standards and Training Alliance of floorcovering professionals

Earned per skill-set rather than as one qualification, and written into specifications rather than merely admired. The Department of Veterans Affairs adopted it into its own master specification sections 09 68 00 Carpeting, 09 65 19 Resilient Tile Flooring, 09 65 16 Resilient Sheet Flooring and 09 68 21 Athletic Carpeting, which means every VA carpet, resilient tile and athletic carpeting job specified has to be completed by a certified installer. If federal work is on the board, this is not a preference.

Licensing in commercial flooring is set state by state, and this kit does not yet carry a state-by-state entry for it. Check with the licensing board in the state where the seat is. Open the credential check for Commercial Flooring.

Step 6 · Retain

Where each role goes next.

Candidates ask about the next step in the first conversation, and an employer who can answer it keeps the people who had other options. Say it on day one, too.

  • Commercial Carpet Installer

Installers move to lead installer and then foreman, and hard-surface skills broaden the work available.

  • LVT / Hard Surface Installer

Installers move to lead or foreman, and healthcare and clean-room resilient work pays above general commercial.

  • Polished Concrete Installer

Polishing specialists move to crew lead or into decorative and industrial coatings work.

  • Commercial Flooring PM

Flooring PMs move to senior PM or operations manager.

Questions

Hiring for commercial flooring: questions.

What interview questions should I ask when hiring for commercial flooring?

My Trade Talent's Commercial Flooring hiring kit carries three technical questions for each of its 4 roles.
