That gap is consistent with what we see in other specialized trades: candidates and researchers are curious about pay and how to get NABCEP-certified; very few people are searching for staffing help directly, because commercial solar and LED retrofit hiring happens through contractor networks, GC relationships, and specialty staffing partners rather than open job-board search. How much do solar installers and LED retrofit electricians make?
Solar Photovoltaic Installers carry a national median of $53,140 a year (about $25.55/hour), per the latest BLS-sourced wage data via O*NET OnLine. Electricians (who handle most commercial LED retrofit wiring and a large share of solar interconnection work) run higher, at a national median of $63,190 a year (about $30.38/hour). Both figures move a lot by metro and by specialty; we don't have a verified BLS-sourced dollar figure for a NABCEP-certification pay premium specifically, so we're not going to invent one; treat any premium claim you see elsewhere as unverified until proven.
What is NABCEP certification, and why does it matter for hiring?
NABCEP (the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) is a nonprofit certification body founded in 2002 that has become the primary credentialing organization for solar professionals in North America. Its flagship PV Installation Professional certification has been accredited to the ANSI/ISO/IEC 17024 personnel-certification standard since 2007 and is widely regarded as the gold-standard credential for photovoltaic installers. To qualify, a candidate needs documented field experience installing PV systems, a minimum of 58 hours of advanced PV training, and an OSHA-10 construction card or equivalent. It is not a credential someone picks up casually, which is exactly why it is worth verifying directly rather than taking a resume's word for it.
What is the difference between a solar installer and a licensed electrician on a solar crew?
BLS tracks these as two separate occupations. Solar Photovoltaic Installers (47-2231) mount, wire, and commission the PV system itself: panels, racking, conduit, combiner boxes. Electricians (47-2111) are typically the ones who handle the grid interconnection, service-panel work, and any portion of the job that requires a state electrical license to sign off on. Most commercial solar crews need both, and most commercial LED retrofit crews are staffed almost entirely by licensed electricians, since retrofit work is fundamentally an electrical-code job rather than a separate trade.
Is "LED retrofit electrician" a real, separately tracked occupation?
No, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. BLS does not track LED lighting retrofit as its own occupational code; it falls under the general Electricians classification (47-2111). What makes a retrofit electrician a specialist is experience with fixture replacement, driver and ballast compatibility, lighting-controls integration, and utility rebate paperwork, not a separate license or BLS category.
Why is hiring-intent search volume so low for solar and LED roles, if the trade is growing this fast?
Because this is a referral- and network-driven hiring market, not a search-driven one. The SEMrush data behind this page shows real, meaningful search volume for solar pay and certification topics (combined salary and certification search clusters run into the thousands of monthly searches), but combined hiring-intent terms ("hire solar installer workers," "solar installers staffing") sum to only around 90 searches a month. What should I ask a solar installer or LED retrofit electrician in an interview?
For solar candidates, ask them to walk through a specific commercial install from permitting to commissioning, and verify any NABCEP certification directly with NABCEP rather than trusting a resume line. For LED retrofit electricians, ask about fixture and driver compatibility troubleshooting on a real job and their experience navigating utility rebate documentation, since that paperwork trips up crews who have only done new-construction electrical work. For either role, confirm current state electrical licensing status directly if the scope requires it.
