Commercial Pest Control hiring kit

How to hire for Commercial Pest Control.

To hire for commercial pest control well, My Trade Talent's Commercial Pest Control hiring kit takes the one role we recruit in order: what each seat is and what it pays, the technical questions that test it, the 2 credentials to verify, and what can kill the offer between acceptance and the first day.

1 role: Pest Control Technician (Licensed Applicator). Free, with nothing to fill in. If you would rather a recruiter ran the search, that is the Commercial Pest Control recruiting page.

Step 1 · Plan

What each commercial pest control seat is, and what it pays.

Each band is labelled with where it comes from. A My Trade Talent band is mid-experience, built from our own engagement history, and moves with experience and region. A BLS band is the federal 10th to 90th percentile, national and unadjusted, used where we have not closed enough searches in the trade to publish our own.

We publish no commercial pest control median of our own yet, so this is the all-trades figure: My Trade Talent's median commercial trades hire took 21 days across 88 searches closed in 2026 year to date, counted as calendar days from our first contact with the candidate to the hire. The full distribution is in the Hiring Index.

Price the seat by experience and region in the salary calculator, and work out what leaving it open costs in the cost of vacancy calculator.

Step 3 · Interview

How to interview for each commercial pest control role.

Everyone who applies will claim the experience. These are the questions that test it, the signals that separate a strong candidate from a plausible one, and the mistake each seat invites.

Pest Control Technician (Licensed Applicator)

BLS 10th to 90th percentile

Services commercial accounts under a state applicator licence: inspection, identification, treatment with labelled products at labelled rates, exclusion and sanitation recommendations, monitoring devices, and the documentation that an auditor will read. In food and healthcare accounts the record is as inspected as the result.

Questions that find out

  1. Which licence categories do you hold and when do they renew?
  2. A food plant has recurring activity in one zone. How do you work it?
  3. What goes in your service documentation for a third-party audit?

What a strong candidate shows

  • Licence and category stated for the state, with renewal and CEU status current
  • Identifies before treating, and says so without being prompted
  • Has worked audited accounts - food processing, healthcare, warehousing - and knows what the auditor looks for

The mistake this seat invites. Hiring on route experience without checking the licence category against the accounts. An applicator licensed for general pest is not licensed for everything the book contains.

Every role in every trade is in the interview question bank.

Step 4 · Offer

What can kill a commercial pest control offer before day one.

The things that end an accepted offer between the yes and the start date, specific to this trade and each sourced.

  • Certification stops at the state line

EPA is explicit that an applicator must be certified in each state, territory and area of Indian country where they apply restricted use pesticides. A fully certified applicator who relocates is, on their first morning, not certified.

  • Fumigation is a separate qualification, not an add-on

It is its own licence branch in California and needs 40 hours of prequalifying training before the category exam in Texas. A requisition written as termite work that in fact needs fumigation fails at the credential check, after the offer.

  • Out-of-state experience may not count at all

Florida requires three years as a service employee of a licensee, at least one of them in Florida immediately before applying, and 45 documented jobs performed in Florida. A ten-year operator from a neighbouring state cannot sit the exam for a year.

Add up the whole offer, not just the base, in the offer calculator.

Step 5 · Onboard

Credentials to verify before the first day.

Each names the body that issues it and links to the issuer's own page or a .gov page. Researched 2026-09-23; re-read the source before relying on an entry.

  • Commercial pesticide applicator certification, structural category

Each state, territory or tribal lead agency, to EPA minimum standards (40 CFR Part 171)

The credential that legally permits applying or supervising restricted use pesticides in dwellings, food handling premises, institutions and warehouses. EPA sets the competency floor; the states certify. Most states extend the requirement to commercial applicators generally.

  • Associate Certified Entomologist (ACE)

ESA Certification Corporation, the certifying arm of the Entomological Society of America

A portable national credential that sits on top of a state licence rather than replacing it. Eligibility requires a current licence allowing unsupervised application in a structural setting, plus five years of verifiable US pest management experience, reduced by a relevant degree.

State licensing for 39 states (Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin) is in the credential check, each with the agency and its source. Step 6 · Retain

Where each role goes next.

Candidates ask about the next step in the first conversation, and an employer who can answer it keeps the people who had other options. Say it on day one, too.

  • Pest Control Technician (Licensed Applicator)

Technicians move to service manager or into the commercial and food safety specialty, which pays above residential routes.
