Elevator Maintenance licensing in Arizona.

Arizona does not license individual elevator mechanics. The company doing the work needs an Arizona Registrar of Contractors license in the elevator classification: C-12 for commercial, R-12 for residential, or CR-12 for both, covering elevators, dumbwaiters, escalators, moving walks and ramps, and stage and orchestra lifts. Elevator safety enforcement sits with the Industrial Commission under A.R.S. 23-491 and following, which requires private elevator inspectors to register annually and hold certification from an ASME-accredited organization. A 2025 bill that would have required licensed elevator mechanics did not become law, so screen candidates on apprenticeship records and employer references and confirm the employing company holds an active C-12 or CR-12. The same state rules apply in Tucson, so candidates licensed there can work in Phoenix without re-qualifying.

Licensing authority: Arizona Registrar of Contractors (company licensing); Industrial Commission of Arizona, Division of Occupational Safety and Health (elevator safety, A.R.S. Title 23, Chapter 2, Article 12). Confirm current rules with the agency.
