Job descriptions

Job descriptions that screen for you.

A posting-ready job description for 56 commercial trades roles, across 20 trades. Each one lists what the person actually does day to day and what they must hold before they can be hired, written so a qualified candidate recognises the job and an unqualified one screens themselves out.

Written to be posted, not filed. Copy one, add your benefits and how to apply, and the specifics do the first round of screening before anyone reads a resume.

How to use these

Each description has two halves that do different work. The duties tell a qualified candidate whether this is the job they already do — name the equipment and the kind of site, and the right person recognises it in the first three lines. The requirements are the disqualifiers, and every one of them should be something you will actually check before an offer.

What is deliberately missing is your benefits, your vehicle and tool policy, your on-call expectations and how to apply. Those are the parts only you can write, and they are where most postings in the trades are won or lost.

Every description is free to read and free to copy. Nothing here asks for an email.

PRINTABLE PACK

Every description, one page each.

The pack is all 56 descriptions laid out to print or save as a PDF: one page per role, duties and requirements side by side, with the pay range and its source on the sheet. Useful when you are agreeing a role with an owner or an operations manager before it ever reaches a job board.

The descriptions above stay free to read and copy, with no form. The pack is the version you can print, and it is built from this same data, so it cannot go out of date.

We'll only use this to contact you about your inquiry.

Questions employers ask

What makes a trades job description work as a posting?

Specifics a qualified person recognises. Naming the equipment, the credential and the kind of site does more screening than any requirement list, because the right candidate reads it and knows the job is real while the wrong one stops reading. Vague postings get volume, not candidates.

Should the pay range go in the posting?

Yes, and in several states you have no choice. Beyond the law, a posting without a range gets fewer applications from people who are currently employed, which in the trades is most of the people you want. The ranges here are either our own bands or federal wage figures, and each one says which.

How much should I change before posting these?

Add your benefits, your vehicle and tool policy, your on-call expectations and how to apply. Keep the duties and requirements close to what is written, because they are the part doing the screening. Cutting the specifics to make the posting shorter is the most common way employers widen their funnel and worsen it.

Why are the requirements shorter than most job descriptions?

Because everything on the list has to be a real disqualifier. A requirement nobody checks teaches candidates that none of the list is checked, and it discourages the honest ones most. What is listed here is what the role genuinely cannot be done without.

Trade Talk A monthly hiring brief for commercial trades employers

What changed in your trade this month, and what to do about it.

One email a month, and only one. We write a separate issue for every trade we recruit in, so you get yours - not a round-up with your trade buried in paragraph nine. Every issue is written for the person actually doing the hiring.

  • Where wages moved in your trade, by market, and what that does to your next offer
  • How long roles like yours are taking to fill, and where it is getting worse
  • Interview and screening tactics that are landing candidates this month
  • What contractors competing for the same people are doing differently

Built on federal wage data, our own closed searches, and what we hear on the desk every week. Written for employers, not candidates. No pitch, no filler, one click to leave.

Pick your trade. That is the one issue you get, once a month.

One email a month. Your trade and your address, nothing else - we do not sell either, and you can unsubscribe from the bottom of any issue. Read this month's issue for your trade first →
